August - Intersectionality Awareness Month

At Thales, we believe in the power of diversity and inclusion to drive innovation and excellence. We are proud to sponsor Intersectionality Awareness Month, an initiative that highlights the importance of understanding and embracing the multiple, intersecting identities that shape our experiences.

Our commitment is to foster a truly diverse workforce and a culture that respects and values each individual's uniqueness. Operating across various industry sectors, we generate creative solutions for our customers. We strive to build an environment where our colleagues feel respected for who they are and appreciate the value their individuality brings to our organisation.

Our vision is for Thales UK to adopt a culture where everyone, regardless of age, ethnicity, gender, cultural heritage, or religious belief, can reach their full potential at work. Providing the right infrastructure and support is crucial to us, ensuring everyone feels respected and included at work.

Intersectionality is more than a concept; it is a commitment to recognising and addressing the complex and interconnected nature of social categorisations such as race, gender, age, sexual orientation, disability, and socio-economic status. By acknowledging these overlapping identities, we strive to create a more inclusive environment where every individual can thrive.

This vision is led by the knowledge that employee empowerment, engagement and talent development, from the widest pool possible, is crucial to obtain diverse ideas, which help our industry to stay innovative. This involves targeted recruitment activity as well as ensuring that our hiring processes are free from bias. To maintain and support our efforts, we work with external organisations, charities and partners who all share our passion and commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion (ED&I).

As an organisation, we realise how crucial intersectionality is in helping us understand the individual unique challenges our employees face, which cannot be fully addressed by looking at each identity category in isolation. By considering the various ways in which identities intersect, we seek to create more comprehensive and effective strategies to promote diversity and inclusion.

Thales takes pride in being an employer that continuously improves and promotes Equity, Diversity and inclusion. Our aim is to foster an environment where everyone feels heard, respected and included.

We invite you to join us and VERCIDA in celebrating Intersectionality Awareness Month and supporting our ongoing efforts to champion diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Women in STEM

As part of Intersectionality Awareness Month, VERCIDA highlights Thales' initiatives to support women and underrepresented groups in STEM through programmes like the Solaris Women's Executive Leadership Development, partnerships with STEM Returners, and the "We in Thales" network. These efforts aim to enhance career development and promote gender diversity within the company.

INTERSECTIONALITY AWARENESS MONTH

This August, we will be focussing on the importance of recognising the many intersectional identities that makes us unique and different from one another. A Non-traditional Path for Women in Engineering: Kiome’s Story of Career Evolution at Thales

Whenever someone asks me how I got into engineering, the short answer is “By accident”. After I did my A-levels, I didn’t really know what I wanted to do and bounced between a lot of different degree options before eventually deciding to study maths and music.

From Aspiring Engineer to Diversity Advocate: Kundai Dangare Inspires Young Engineers and Senior Leaders at Thales

My dad was a civil engineer and he’d take me and my brother to his workplace during the summer holidays. This meant I always knew engineering was an achievable route for me, but for so many other young people, having role models who look like them is important, so they know that any career path should not be off-limits.

Gender Equality in STEM: David Hodges' Research and Thales' Strategic Approach
People might be wondering how a white, cis male in the south-east of the UK started researching gender bias. It probably came about originally from my early life. I was raised by a single mother, with all the struggles and challenges that comes with that, so I always had an interest in levelling the uphill battles faced by women.
