August - Intersectionality Month
Exploring the interplay between social identities and how they contribute to our lived experiences
We believe that true inclusion goes beyond single-faceted diversity initiatives. It requires a deeper understanding of intersectionality; the complex and cumulative way that different forms of discrimination combine, overlap, or intersect. Coined by scholar Kimberlé Crenshaw, intersectionality highlights that an individual's identity is not a single story but a rich tapestry woven from various threads of race, gender, class, sexual orientation, disability, and other social categorisations.
This requires a shift from a one-size-fits-all approach to one that is more holistic and employee-centric.
Here are some key principles for fostering an intersectional workplace:
- Educate and Raise Awareness: Foster a culture of learning where emplyees at all levels can understand the concept of intersectionality and its impact on collegues.
- Amplify Diverse Voices: Create platforms for employees with intersecting identities to share their stories and experiences. This can be through employee resource groups, panel discussions, and internal communications.
- Review Policies and Practices: Examine your organisation's policies and procedures through an intersectional lens. This includes everything from recruitment and promotion processes to a review of your gender pay gap.
- Foster a Culture of Allyship: Encourage employees to become active allies for their colleagues with different intersecting identities. This involves listening, learning, and using their privilege to advocate for others.
- Lead with Empathy and Openness: Encourage leaders to be open to feedback and to lead with empathy, recognising that they may not always have all the answers but are committed to creating a more inclusive environment.
