February - Social Mobility Month

Social mobility refers to the ability of individuals to move between social and economic classes, often through education, employment, and career progression. In an ideal society, background should not determine a person’s opportunities in life. However, many still face barriers due to their socioeconomic status. Social Mobility Month is a time to celebrate the efforts of inclusive employers who are breaking down these barriers and ensuring that talent and potential are recognised over privilege and connections.

A key example of this commitment is Pinsent Masons, named one of the Top 75 Employers in the Social Mobility Employer Index. The firm actively supports individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds, helping them enter and progress in the legal profession. The story of Christopher, who became the first in his family to attend university and secure a corporate career, highlights the impact of these initiatives.

Another organisation championing social mobility is the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR). Their Nuclear Degree Apprenticeship programme provides alternative entry routes into the nuclear industry, allowing individuals to gain hands-on experience while earning a degree. The graduation of its first cohort marks a major milestone in creating accessible career pathways in a highly specialised field.

Aviva has also been a longstanding advocate for social mobility, having been accredited as a Real Living Wage employer for over a decade. By ensuring fair pay, Aviva helps employees achieve financial stability and career growth, regardless of their background. Additionally, the company’s participation in initiatives such as the African Caribbean recruitment event in Sheffield demonstrates a proactive approach to engaging with underrepresented communities.

Ways to advocate social mobility in the workplace

  • Widening access to opportunities – Removing barriers such as unpaid internships and ensuring fair recruitment processes.
  • Providing alternative career pathways – Offering apprenticeships, traineeships, and degree apprenticeships to those who may not follow traditional academic routes.
  • Ensuring fair pay and progression – Committing to the Real Living Wage and offering mentoring and sponsorship programmes for employees from lower-income backgrounds.
  • Engaging with communities – Partnering with schools, universities, and outreach programmes to inspire and support the next generation of diverse talent.

Educational institutions are also playing a pivotal role. University Academy 92 (UA92), in collaboration with Microsoft and industry partners, delivered a five-day tech immersion programme as part of the Northern Initiative. This scheme is designed to provide young people with the skills and experiences needed to succeed in the tech industry, thereby promoting social mobility through education and training.

Social Mobility at Barclays

Inspire, the Social Mobility ERG is a new Employee Resource Group that aims to amplify the voice of colleagues who identify as coming from a lower socio-economic background, and encourage everyone to learn more about the impact and challenges that socio-economic status has on the career and workplace experiences of these colleagues.

As part of the new global Employee Resource Group strategy, the key focus for our ERG is to champion the benefits of diversity at Barclays, whilst sharing the lived experiences and nuances of our diverse colleagues at Barclays. As we sharpen the focus on Diversity at Barclays, the ERG strategy will focus on four main pillars (Attract, Retain, Develop and Engage).
