Celebrating Black History Month
Celebrating Black History Month
October is here, and with it comes a dedicated time to recognise the rich cultural and historical contributions from the Black community. Black History Month is more than just a commemoration of the past; it’s an active celebration of the creativity, leadership, and strength of Black men and women around the world.
To create a truly inclusive and innovative workplace, it's fundamental to embrace the diversity and heritage of all individuals. This can be done in different ways:
- Amplify Black Voices and Stories: Highlight experiences, achievements, and insights of Black colleagues and leaders.
- Educational Initiatives: Organise internal and external sessions focusing on Black history, racial justice and diversity in the workplace. Share profiles of influential Black figures and their historical contributions.
- Support Black-Owned Businesses and Non-Profits: Proactively promote economic empowerment by highlighting Black-owned business to support throughout the month and beyond.
- Community and Culture: Encourage team bonding and cultural appreciation by hosting events that celebrate Black culture.

Sanctuary Celebrates Cultural Diversity Day
Sanctuary's recent Cultural Diversity Day is a fantastic example of a company moving beyond good intentions and creating genuinely engaging, employee-led celebrations. They brought people together through shared cultural food, traditional dress, mehndi workshops, and open discussions, celebrating the many cultures within their colleague and customer base. The event was primarily driven by their Race Equality Network, which works to champion race equality and empower ethnic minority colleagues across the organisation. This initiative is a core part of their "Inclusion for All" strategy, showcasing their dedication to an inclusive culture where colleagues feel safe to express their authentic selves.
