February - LGBTQ+ History Month

LGBTQ+ History Month is a month-long celebration of the diverse history of the LGBTQ+ movement and provides the opportunity to learn and reflect on the sacrifices made by the community.

At Barclays, we support LGBTQ+ History month by supporting colleagues, challenging homophobia, biphobia and transphobia and educating others on the importance of inclusion, equality, diversity, and respect. Whether it is being the first bank to promote a transgender woman to the position of branch manager, or the first bank to feature LGBTQ+ couples in our advertising, Barclays has a strong history of championing LGBTQ+ diversity.

We aim to champion equality, understanding and respect for colleagues, customers and clients across sexuality and gender identity. We want every one of our colleagues to feel comfortable being themselves at work and encourage a range of activities and initiatives that help people connect. Our LGBTQ+ Employee Resource Group (ERG), Spectrum, is one of our longest-standing networks.

Barclays: Andy talks about celebrating LGBTQ+ History Month and his parenthood journey

Andy Green talks about celebrating LGBTQ+ History Month and his parenthood journey, and how Barclays has supported him along the way. I have been with Barclays for almost 10 years, always working around technology as an IT project manager for the corporate banking division. Now, I am a Project Manager VP. In previous jobs, I had come out as a gay man, but it was always later when I felt safe enough to do so. The difference with Barclays was that I was able to be my true self from the get-go. My husband works for Barclays too, and it has always been a supportive, inclusive environment. Since 2014, I have been a member of Spectrum, Barclays' LGBTQ+ employee resource group (ERG). I’ve had a number of roles within Spectrum, such as fundraising for different charities and taking a lead in Pride activations over the years. It started out with Pride in London and now we take part in about 20 to 30 Pride events across the country. I’ve been on the executive committee for Spectrum UK & Europe for the past five years. It’s good to be able to take more of a leadership role, looking at strategy, providing that continuity for our community and colleagues, and reaching out to communities outside Barclays.

LGBTQ+ HISTORY MONTH

LGBTQ+ allies can be found across many organisations around the world and they are often hidden in plain sight. They're the ones who stand up with great pride, ready to face the challenges that await them and their colleagues by being their authentic self. The world is constantly changing and evolving and this month at VERCIDA we want to illustrate how our allies are changing the workplace to be a more inclusive environment for the LGBTQ+ community.
