How Leading Employers Are Supporting Working Families in 2026

Balancing a career with raising children or caring for a loved one is one of the most common challenges in working life, yet too many employees still feel they have to choose between professional ambition and family responsibility. Parents and Carers Month is a time to recognise the individuals who manage both, and to spotlight the employers building workplaces where that balance is genuinely possible.

For jobseekers, this month is a chance to identify organisations that go beyond policy documents and put real, practical support in place, from flexible working to dedicated parent and carer networks. For employers, it is an opportunity to demonstrate that supporting working families is not a concession but a competitive advantage. The businesses attracting and retaining the best talent are the ones making parenthood and caregiving compatible with career progression, not a barrier to it.

Creating an Inclusive Office Space for Nursing Mothers at Southern Housing

When Southern Housing planned a move to new offices, Quality Optimisation Lead Helen Rudd spotted a significant gap in the floorplan: there was no designated space for nursing mothers. As someone who spent over eight years either pregnant or breastfeeding, and who volunteers as a breastfeeding counsellor, Rudd understood exactly what that omission would mean for mothers returning to work.

Rather than letting it slide, she raised it with the Parents and Carers network group, triggering a collaboration between the network, People Support and Facilities teams. Together they designed a private, comfortable and accessible space for nursing mothers, now included in the final office plans. Rudd credits her own experience of using a nursing room at a previous workplace with enabling her to attend Keeping in Touch days and complete training that "would've been much harder without a private, supportive space." It is a straightforward example of employee voice shaping workplace design for the better.

Returning from Parental Leave: The First Months Back at Mott MacDonald

Taking parental leave is one thing. Coming back is another. Simon Johnson, a Technical Director at Mott MacDonald, took four months of shared parental leave and describes the return as "very hard," not because the organisation made it difficult, but because the reality of juggling a new baby with a demanding role is relentless. Sleep deprivation, racing home from the office, guilt about being away from both sides of life: Johnson is frank about the adjustment.

What made the difference was the practical support around him. Colleagues handled his workload without hesitation and, critically, left him alone during his leave so he could fully disconnect. On his return, he used annual leave strategically, worked from home more frequently and made the deliberate decision to step back from management responsibilities to prioritise his family during that stage. Mott MacDonald has since enhanced its parental leave offering to up to 24 weeks fully paid, a signal that the company treats parenthood as something to invest in rather than work around.

A Kinder Start: Aviva's Back-to-School Leave Supports Parents

The first day of school is a milestone that most working parents experience through a fog of logistics and guilt. Aviva has addressed this with a refreshingly simple policy: half a day of paid leave for UK employees to be present for their child's first day at primary or secondary school.

It sounds small, but the impact is real. Rowan, a Partner Operations Lead, used the time to walk his daughter into her first day of primary school, describing it as "one less thing to juggle in the morning." Shelley from the Media Relations team took the leave for her daughter's secondary school transition, valuing the chance to spend unhurried time together on a nerve-wracking day. This sits within Aviva's broader commitment to family-friendly employment: since 2017 the company has offered Equal Parental Leave, with nearly 4,000 employees taking it up since 2018 and 46% of those being fathers, a figure that points to genuine cultural shift rather than a policy that only exists on paper.
