Returning to Work Month: How Inclusive Employers Help Talented People Restart Their Career
A career break should never mean a career ending. People step away from work for all sorts of reasons: a new baby, a parent who needs care, a seriously ill child, redundancy, or a health crisis of their own. Returning to work is rarely as simple as picking up where they left off. Confidence dips, a gap on the CV invites questions, and the responsibilities that caused the break do not always stop when the job starts again.
Returning to Work Month celebrates the people making that comeback and the employers who help it stick. For jobseekers, it is a chance to find organisations offering support that makes a real difference: phased returns, flexible hours, carer’s and adjustment passports, paid leave with a guaranteed role to come back to, and returnships that rebuild skills with a mentor alongside. For employers, it is proof that returners bring resilience, fresh perspective and hard-won experience that the hiring market too often overlooks.
Explore the stories below and see how inclusive employers are welcoming people back.

Two Hours a Day: Jacqui’s Comeback at DWP After a Brain Injury
Back to Engineering: Inside Thales’s STEM Returners Programme
Hayley Holguin had seven years in aviation and an engineering degree behind her when the pandemic made her redundant. She ended up working at a local school. Then she spotted an advert for the Thales and STEM Returners pilot, written for people in exactly her position. A 12-week Systems Engineer placement, with a mentor and extra transition support, turned into a permanent role. Thales is now running the programme again, with up to 10 places for systems, software and hardware engineers across Cheadle, Crawley and Templecombe. The need is clear: the STEM Returners Index names recruitment bias as the biggest barrier for returners, and women are more likely to face it. A career break pauses a CV. It does not erase the skills.
